Sofia Coppola: The Bling Ring

Sofia Coppola’s films have always really interested me ever since I saw Lost in Translation (2003) for the first time. The combination of subtlety, humour and sadness that she brings to her stories and to the relationships that underpin those narratives are perfectly gauged and create a tone which makes for a very personal insight into the characters lives. Melodrama seems to be the default for many character based films but with beautifully written simple narratives and three dimensional fallible characters, Sofia Coppola avoids melodrama and creates her own far more intriguing and layered tone. Above all Coppola achieves in creating an experience which is subtle, intimate and riveting, which is a feet that is rare to find in modern cinema, especially done so expertly. Somewhere (2010) another film written and directed by Sofia Coppola again encapsulates these qualities and is another brilliant example of her skill as a director/ writer, which I would highly recommend for anyone who enjoyed Lost in Translation or to anyone who hasn’t seen either, the trailer is below.

The first official trailer for Coppola’s new film The Bling Ring has just been released and although you can never truly tell what a film is going to be like from the trailer alone, this upon first glance looks like a slightly different pace of film for Coppola. Where both her films previously mentioned focus on a relationship between two people, Lost in Translation between Charlotte (Scarlet Johansson) and Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and in Somewhere between Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) and his daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning), The Bling Ring looks as if it focuses on a group of young adults rather than two individuals of different ages. I am sure The Bling Ring will have individual relationships that will come to light within the narrative, this however still seems like a slightly lighter comedic turn, where as her previous films humour came from slightly darker places. I am none the less excited to see what this film will offer and whether the differences that can only be speculated upon at this point enhance or detract from Coppola’s style. The trailer for the Bling Ring is below and it is going to be released 5th July 2013.
