INHERENT VICE

This is the new film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master, Magnolia, Boogie Nights). Anderson’s screenplay is an adaptation of the well received novel of the same title, which was written by Thomas Pynchon, who reportedly has whole heartedly endorsed Anderson’s screenplay.

Set in Los Angeles at the end of the psycadelic 60’s the story follows a drug fuelled private eye, Larry “Doc” Sportello, who investigates the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend which takes him on a bizarre journey to uncover the truth. Along the way dealing with a myriad of characters such as surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, a tenor sax player working undercover, an ex-con with a swastika tattoo and a fondness for Ethel Merman, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang.

Paul Thomas Anderson is certainly one of the most interesting and consistent writer / directors out there at the moment. Anderson’s films tend to centre around unhinged, difficult and eclectic characters. Some of his previous films have covered everything from a turn of the century prospector, in There Will Be Blood, my personal favourite, a porn star with very large appendage, in Boogie Nights and a charismatic cult leader, in The Master. The news of Inherent Vice then is certainly exciting, I have not read the book yet, but the premise of a neon-psycadelic-noir, headed up by a drug addled private eye definitely sounds like something I want to see bought to life by Anderson.

Who better than to play the aforementioned private eye than that of, the always brilliant, Joaquin Pheonix, who will play the titular role of Doc Sportello. Yes Inherent Vice will reunite Anderson with his lead from The Master, as a side note if you have not seen Pheonix’s performance in The Master I urge you to go out and watch it now.The rest of the cast is equally impressive with Benicio Del Torro, Reece Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Josh Brolin to name but a few.

With an intriguing premise, one of the best director/writers out there and a great cast there is not much else to do apart from wait for word of an official release date, which will be sometime this year, and for an official trailer, both of which we will of course post on here as soon as we know them. This is definitely one of the films to watch out for this year, more information will be coming soon.
