Mixed emotions when looking at this. It would seem that this project will be a resurrection of the thrilling original, immortalising Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 thriller The Shining, based on Stephen King’s book under the same title. What we know is that the film will be, of course, set years before Jack (Nicholson), Wendy (Duvall) and Danny (not really worth linking, he hasn’t done much) care for The Stanley Hotel.

What we know about the prequel is quite interesting. It has just been revealed that The Walking Dead writer, Glen Mazzara, has been asked to put together the first draft for the flick. His commitment to the (potential) thriller is obvious as it is reported that he has now left the zombie show following the conclusion of it’s third season.
After the popularity of The Shining, we have no doubt that interest in the prequel will be massive! A name has also been given, The Overlook Hotel, I like it. Rumours of a prequel started circulating around Hollywood as far back as July of last year, with early plans suggesting that it would look at the events leading up to the family arriving at The Stanley Hotel

Show business has messed around with sequels before in the form of the 1997 miniseries treat with the same title of the film. Kings homage to his original book will be a sequel (in book form) entitled Doctor Sleep. King explores the life of Danny, now a 40-year-old man who works at a hospice in upstate New York (sounds like it could be just as fucked up as the original). The book is set to be released in early September.
Like I said at the beginning, I have ‘mixed emotions’. Warner Bros are taking charge of this one but there is yet to be any script, no cast has been confirmed nor director and will the story be any good? Or relevant? Wasn’t the family peachy before they arrived at the hotel, it was the hotel that made them (Jack mainly……and the kid a little bit) fucked up in the first place right? I guess we’ll just have to sit tight for a little bit and wait this one out.
What do you think of the prequel? Good idea or bad? An extension of the incredible mansion that was the original or do you think it will be a shitty little green house in it’s garden? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.
